About Natural Stone
Types of Stone Used
The natural stone or dimension stone (for example, granite) is shaped using cutting and finishing equipment in the shop of the fabricator. The edges are commonly put on by hand-held routers, grinders, or CNC equipment. If the stone has a highly variegated pattern, the stone may be laid out in final position in the shop for the customer's inspection. Then the countertop assembly is installed on the job site. Initial slab fabrication usually takes place at or near the quarry of origin, with blocks being sawn to the thickness and then machined into standard widths, before being surface polished and edged. This method removes the need to ship waste material and reduces the time needed to prepare client orders. A wide range of details may be pre-fabricated on premises in Newark, allowing for easier and faster installation of different stone elements.
Examples of products we work with but aren't limited to
Marble
Marble is a metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate minerals, most commonly calcite or dolomite. Geologists use the term marble to refer to metamorphosed limestone; however, stonemasons use the term more broadly to encompass un-metamorphosed limestone. Marble is commonly used for sculpture and as a building material.
White Marble has been prized for its use in sculptures since classical times. This preference has to do with its softness, relative isotropy and homogeneity, and a relative resistance to shattering. Also, the low index of refraction of calcite allows light to give "life" to marble sculptures of the human body. Construction Marble is a stone which is composed of calcite, dolomite or serpentine, which is capable of taking a polish. More generally in construction, specifically the dimension stone trade, the term "marble" is used for any crystalline calcitic rock (and some non-calcitic rocks) useful as building stone.
Granite
Granite is a common and widely occurring type of intrusive, felsic, igneous rock. Granites usually have a medium- to coarse-grained texture. Occasionally, some individual crystals are larger than groundmass in that case the texture is known as porphyritic. A granitic rock with a porphyritic texture is sometimes known as a porphyry.
Granites can be pink to gray in color, depending on their chemistry and mineralogy. By definition, granite has a color index - the percentage of the rock made up of dark minerals - of less than 25%. Granite is usually found in the continental plates of the Earth's crust. Granite is nearly always massive, hard and tough. Therefore, it has gained popularity for use as a construction stone.
Slate
Slate is a fine-grained, foliated, homogeneous metamorphic rock derived from an original shale-type sedimentary rock composed of clay or volcanic ash through low-grade regional metamorphism. The result is a foliated rock in which the foliation may not correspond to the original sedimentary layering.
Slate is frequently grey in color, especially when seen in masse covering roofs. However, slate occurs in a variety of colors even from a single locality; slate can be found in many shades of grey, from pale to dark, and may also be purple, green or cyan. The word slate is also used for some objects made from slate. It may mean a single roofing slate, or a writing slate, traditionally a small piece of slate, often framed in wood, used with chalk as a notepad or notice board etc., and especially for recording charges in pubs and inns. The phrase "clean slate" or "blank slate" comes from this use.
Soapstone
Soapstone (also known as steatite or soap rock) is a metamorphic rock, a talc-schist. It is largely composed of the mineral talc and is thus rich in magnesium. It is produced by dynamo thermal metamorphism and metasomatism, which occurs in the areas where tectonic plates are sub ducted, changing rocks by heat and pressure, with influx of fluids, but without melting.
It has been a medium for carving for thousands of years. Soapstone is used for inlaid designs, sculpture, coasters, and kitchen countertops and sinks. The term steatite is sometimes used for soapstone.
Dimensional Limestone
Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the minerals calcite and/or aragonite, which are different crystal forms of calcium carbonate. Like most other sedimentary rocks, limestone are composed of grains; however, some limestone do not consist of grains at all, and are formed completely by the chemical precipitation of calcite or aragonite, i.e. travertine.
The solubility of limestone in water and weak acid solutions leads to karst landscapes. Regions overlying limestone bedrock tend to have fewer visible groundwater sources (ponds and streams), as surface water easily drains downward through joints in the limestone. While draining, water and organic acid from the soil slowly enlarges these cracks over thousands or millions of years; dissolving the calcium carbonate and carrying it away in solution. Most cave systems are through limestone bedrock.
Stone Finishes
Polished - a glossy surface which brings out the full color and character of the stone.
Hone - a satin smooth surface finish with little or no gloss. This is recommended for commercial floors.
Thermal - a surface treatment applied by intense heat flaming.
Diamond Sawed - finish produced by sawing with a diamond-toothed saw.
Rough Sawed - a surface finish resulting from the gang- or frame saw process.
Bush Hammered - a mechanical process which produces textured surfaces. Texture varies from subtle to rough.
